At least thirteen passengers perish and ninety-eight wounded in train crash in Mexico.

A fatal railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster happened on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the thinnest stretch of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was designed to provide an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify what caused this tragedy,” stated the head of state.

The leader reported that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in critical condition. The official added plans to travel to Oaxaca to meet those affected.

Major Initiative of Former Government

The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the former leader, whose term concluded the prior year. This project was closely associated with his government's developmental vision for the southern region.

Another ambitious railway undertaking from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to stimulate the economy of a comparatively disadvantaged part of the country.

Building Management and Worries

The development of both railway systems was supervised by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an accelerated speed, surpassing forecasts to be partially opened before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had simultaneously raised ongoing apprehensions over construction quality.

  • Sunday's accident was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train within the past twelve months.
  • This involves an earlier crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had several non-lethal derailments.

Demands for Investigation and Halt

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a key rival party demanded an immediate suspension in the building and running of all such projects.

This stoppage was requested pending a comprehensive technical review. The party emphasized that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In reply, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these strategic undertakings.
